Police Authority Inspection
In September 2009, Lancashire Police Authority was one of the very first police authorities to be inspected by Her Majesty's Inspectorate of Constabulary (HMIC) and the Audit Commission.
Police authority inspections align with the frameworks for Comprehensive Area Assessment (CAA) in England and HMIC’s new Rounded Assessment of police force performance.
In Lancashire, we believe that continuous improvement is a key part of delivering public services and through our inspection we look forward to being part of the ongoing development of local accountability arrangements for the police service.
Assessment Criteria
We were assessed against four themes with a number of criteria underpinning each theme. The four themes were:
- Setting Strategic Direction and Priorities;
- Scrutinising Performance Outcomes;
- Achieving Results through Community Engagement and Partnerships;
- Ensuring Value for Money and Productivity.
There were three areas that thread through each assessment theme and these were specifically referred to in the final inspection report. These were:
- Strong Leadership, including in partnership;
- Active community engagement which enables the public to contribute to and understand the balancing of priorities;
- Ability to tackle inequality and improve outcomes for people whose circumstances make them vulnerable.
