Prior to entering politics I farmed in West Lancashire and enjoyed serving as a local parish councillor at the same time. I found it gave me the opportunity of relating to my community, listening to their concerns and finding solutions. I found it was something I really enjoyed doing, and on retirement I became more involved first as a West Lancashire Borough Councillor and subsequently as a Lancashire County Councillor. From the latter position I was appointed to Lancashire Police Authority in July 2009.
I thought it important to understand as quickly as possible the nuts and bolts of this large new organisation. I was therefore pleased to be appointed to the Human Resources and Professional Standards & Citizen Focus Committee, with responsibilities also to Southern Division and the Independent Advisory Group. I am taking every opportunity I can to attend seminars, conferences, etc. as I can to make myself fully acquainted with the organisation.
My particular interest is Community Engagement, and I represent that "Special Interest" on the Authority. I welcome communications from members of the public on the work of the Police Authority or indeed any aspect of policing.
